NBC Kundu2 Case Study

Project Background

VIDEPPRO have implemented a large number of broadcast and production solutions in various markets across Papua New Guinea within the last 25 years. Over this period, the PNG film and television sector has developed a strong confidence in the VIDEOPRO Team, recognising the passion they hold for broadcast and production equipment and the innovative solutions they provide to this market sector.

Four years ago, the PNG Government was looking for a solutions provider to assist in the building of a new TV station (NBC Kundu2) specialising in news, current affairs and indigenous programming. VIDEOPRO was asked to assist and accepted the challenge, responding with the supply of Sony broadcast and production cameras for both the studio, and in the field, together with Avid video editing equipment and shared storage solutions. A comprehensive Avid editing training schedule was also provided which completed the overall project.

Based on the successful completion of this project back in 2009, it was natural for NBC Kundu2 to approach VIDEOPRO to assist in the design of the HDTV compliant expansion of their Broadcast facility in 2013.

Installation

NBC PNG required an industry standard HDTV system which would enable them to provide news and current affairs programming for their own production facilities in addition to providing program content for the Australian television networks. To meet their upgrade requirements the installation consisted of VIZRT computer graphics, Panasonic Broadcast vision switcher, multiview, upgrading of the Avid workstations and shared storage, and comprehensive training on all new equipment.

A major area identified for natural expansion of the broadcast facility was a world class VIZRT computer graphics system, an essential inclusion for news and current affairs programming. The Editshare was fully upgraded to meet their increased shared storage requirements and in addition to Avid Media Composer licences, ongoing upgrades were completed on site. A Panasonic vision switcher and multiview was installed in the new studio control room, with full integration of the VIZRT graphics systems. Glenn Bailey, Director of Sales & Marketing and Thomas Nelson, Senior Graphics Specialist for VIZRT Australia, were onboard to support with the full integration of these systems.

A comprehensive training course on studio lighting, field production cameras, and sound recording techniques was conducted by VIDEOPRO Product Sales Representative, Robert Dew. To cater for the large number of people interested in training, Robert needed to move the sessions outside the studio to allow for maximum visibility, engagement and interaction with the products on display.

In addition to the supply, installation and training of the new systems, the VIDEOPRO Team worked closely with the NBC Kundu2 engineering staff, assisting with general maintenance to ensure the Broadcast facility would function at full capacity. The project required precise planning to account for the TV studios remote location which is often dusty, hot, and humid. Graham Bennett, Sales Manager for the VIDEOPRO Broadcast & Production Team stated, “Support mechanisms readily available on the Australian mainland were not available in PNG during the installation process, including the usual necessities of phone and fast internet access. This required the team to ensure all systems and equipment for the project was prepared prior to departure.”

Helping expand the technology, and supplying training for the NBC Kundu2 broadcast facility has been a fulfilling experience for the VIDEOPRO Broadcast & Production Team.

Memafu Kapera, CEO & Managing Director at NBC PNG stated, “Back in 2007, we were looking for a Broadcast systems integrator to partner with us in the building of our national television service. It was natural that we engaged Videopro, who have been providing goods and services to the production industry, throughout PNG for the past 25 years. Videopro has a strong relationship with our staff, providing proactive support, including education and product training. The friendship between staff and the team at Videopro is held with high regard.”
