ABC Brisbane Mornings: Retail Panel with Cameron Douglas (Videopro) | Credit Card Surcharges, Sourdough and Retail Marketing Strategies | 28th May, 2026

On May 28, 2026, Cameron Douglas, CEO of Videopro, joined ABC Brisbane Mornings with Steve Austin as part of the regular retail panel alongside fellow panellist, Christine Moody.

The discussion explored a wide range of retail topics, from credit card surcharges and retail marketing trends, through to the growing influence of brand perception and nostalgia-driven campaigns in today’s economic climate.

Key Topics from the Discussion

  • ‘Days’ such as National Donut Day, Public Education Day and National High-Five Day, and how brands use them as marketing opportunities.
  • Reports of charity donation boxes and tip jars being stolen from retail stores.
  • The ACCC’s position that it will not be responsible for enforcing credit card surcharge bans set by card networks.
  • The merits of a good sourdough loaf!
  • The growing divide between discount and premium retail experiences.
  • The increasing role of brand perception in determining consumer value.
  • How consumers continue to pursue small moments of joy through retail and dining experiences, despite cost-of-living pressures.
  • The effectiveness of nostalgia marketing, with brands such as RM Williams, Vegemite and Adidas using heritage and familiarity to connect with consumers.

During the discussion, Steve Austin reflected on advice from his grandfather:

“Always buy quality and pay for it, because that is the smartest financial decision.”

Cameron noted that historically, this was often true because price generally reflected quality. However, today’s retail environment has shifted significantly, with branding often carrying more influence than product quality itself.

“Brand has become so big that it has actually come at the expense of quality. You can buy an expensive watch or an expensive car, and it does not guarantee quality,” said Cameron.
