Brisbane Grammar School STEAM Building | Audio Visual Case Study

Setting a New Benchmark for Future-Focused Learning

In 2024, Brisbane Grammar School (BGS) opened its purpose-built STEAM Building. This exciting new building was designed to be a hub for ideas and innovation, and we are thrilled with the end result. The STEAM precinct is a five-level flagship facility which includes science labs, classrooms, combinable design studios, breakout zones, meeting spaces and a large, flexible format incubator space - all designed to support contemporary teaching and learning across Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

Working in partnership with BESIX Watpac, Videopro is proud to have delivered an intuitive Audio Visual ecosystem of innovative technologies and system solutions that supports flexible, student-centred learning while remaining simple for teachers to use every day. The result is a technology-rich environment where AV enhances learning without becoming a distraction.

Supporting a Contemporary Teaching Vision

From the outset, the project was guided by a clear educational objective: to create spaces where technology fades into the background, allowing teachers to focus their attention on teaching.

Working closely with BGS Digital Innovation Specialist, Mitchell Collins, the design prioritised learning from the centre of the room, with teachers and students working side by side rather than from a traditional front-of-class position. Wireless presentation, flexible display layouts and consistent room control enable teachers to move freely, adapt content in real time and support both whole-class and small-group learning.

“We wanted to create sort of the seamless transition between teaching and innovation so that we could have the technology almost like fade into the background so that the teachers could use the screens without even having to think about it.” said Mitchell Collins, Brisbane Grammar School.

A Unified AV Backbone Across Diverse Spaces

While each space within the STEAM Building has unique functional requirements, Videopro delivered a unified AV backbone that provides a consistent user experience across the entire facility.

As a long-standing “Crestron house”, Brisbane Grammar School benefits from a familiar control environment in every room. Teachers can walk into any space and operate the technology with confidence.

Key elements of the AV solution include:

  • LG commercial displays deployed across classrooms and shared spaces
  • Crestron NVX encoders and decoders at all displays and touchdown points
  • Shure lapel microphones in every classroom to ensure clear audio delivery
  • Crestron ceiling speakers throughout the building
  • Building-wide digital signage for communication and wayfinding

This consistent approach simplifies support, improves reliability and ensures long-term scalability.

Flexible Learning Spaces Designed Around Students

General learning areas are configured to support flexible, student-centred teaching.

Typical classrooms include:

  • A 7" Crestron touch panel for intuitive room control
  • Multiple displays with NVX decoders
  • Touchdown points with NVX encoders supporting Vivi and laptop input
  • HDMI inputs at displays to enable student breakout collaboration

This configuration supports the shift away from lecture-style delivery, letting teachers move freely, present wirelessly and adapt content layouts to suit whole-class and group learning.

Rooms with inter-operable (operable) walls also have the capability to combine multiple GLAs into a single larger space for exams, presentations, or cohort-based activities. This room-combining functionality is fully managed through the Crestron user interface, allowing seamless control of displays, sources, and audio across the joined spaces.

Beyond the Classroom

The STEAM Building also includes advanced collaboration spaces for staff and the wider school community.

A Crestron Flex–controlled boardroom, featuring an Aver PTZ camera and Sennheiser ceiling microphone arrays, provides professional-grade hybrid meeting capability. Multiple Microsoft Teams Rooms equipped with Logitech Rally solutions support small-group collaboration and remote meetings.

At the heart of the building, a large atrium functions as a town hall and assembly space. Anchored by a 4.8 m × 2.7 m VuePix Wallpaper LED wall with 2.5 mm pixel pitch, the space delivers exceptional visual performance even in bright ambient light. Meyer Audio loudspeakers and Allen & Heath mixing provide high-quality sound reinforcement, with all systems centrally controlled via Crestron for simple, reliable operation.

A Foundation for the Future

More than just a new facility, the Brisbane Grammar School STEAM Building is a tangible expression of the school’s future-focused teaching vision. By combining thoughtful spatial design with seamlessly integrated AV technology, Videopro has delivered a flexible, intuitive and scalable learning environment that will support innovation in education for years to come.

“It's everything we hoped it would be and it was kind of like a stepping stone. It gives a peak into the future I think of teaching.” said Mitchell.

Videopro Proud

This is a project Videopro is particularly proud to have been part of. Seeing this project come to life has been incredible and we are so happy to hear that the teacher experience has been fantastic and very user-friendly.

“It's been great working with Brisbane Grammar and seeing such a large scale project come to fruition and we look forward to working with them again in the future.” said Mark Chaplin, Videopro Account Manager.
