John Paul College Coleman Centre | Audio Visual Case Study

Optimising AV Performance for a Multi-Purpose Hall

The Coleman Centre at John Paul College in Daisy Hill is the school’s main multi-purpose hall, hosting everything from assemblies and musicals to basketball and volleyball. With such diverse uses, the space required a flexible, high-performance audio visual solution that could meet both presentation and sporting needs.

The school’s existing over-stage rear-projection system had limited sight lines, making images difficult to see from many areas of the hall. Audio performance also fell short, and the school sought a more engaging, impactful experience for both students and the wider community.

Videopro was engaged to transform the hall’s AV setup. Partnering with CommBox, whose technology is already used across classrooms at John Paul College, Videopro designed and installed a new three-screen display system supported by an upgraded audio network. Every element was carefully selected to withstand the demands of a sports environment, ensuring durability and safety while delivering crisp visuals, clear audio and a seamless experience for every event.

A Three-Screen Display Solution

To address visibility challenges, a new three-screen configuration was introduced. This setup allows the school to display different content across the screens, for example, a live feed or presentation on the over-stage projection screen, while supporting visuals appear on the two large LED side screens.

Two 220-inch, 2.5-pixel pitch LED displays from CommBox were installed, delivering exceptional brightness and wide viewing angles. The enhanced brightness ensures content remains vivid and clear, even with high levels of ambient light or when the house lights are fully raised.

The school’s familiarity with CommBox technology inside their classrooms, made this a natural partnership, and stakeholders from the school were able to visit the CommBox Experience Centre in Spring Hill to view the technology that they would be using in the hall.

John Paul College Coleman Centre AV Upgrade

Engineering for Safety and Durability

Given the scale and weight of the LED displays (each exceeding 300 kilograms), structural integrity was of key importance. The school engaged a structural engineer to design and certify appropriate wall supports. Close collaboration ensured all mounting systems were rated and compliant for safe installation.

Toundefinedwithstand the rigours of a sports environment, the LED panels include:

  • A protective polymer layer over the cabinet face to guard against ball strikes
  • Stainless steel safety tethers securing each tile to the frame, preventing panels from falling in the unlikely event of dislodgement

These design features deliver long-term durability while ensuring the highest safety standards for students and staff.

Enhanced Projection Capability

Complementing the two LED screens is a new over-stage projection system featuring a 13,000-lumen laser projector from Epson, projecting onto a 200-inch motorised screen. The high brightness output ensures strong image performance, even in challenging lighting conditions.

A Comprehensive Audio Upgrade

To match the visual improvements, the Coleman Centre also received a complete audio enhancement, including:

  • Front-of-house speakers and delay speakers from QSC for even sound coverage
  • Subwoofers positioned beneath the stage for low-frequency reinforcement
  • Shure ULXD wireless microphones for reliable, high-quality vocal capture
  • An Allen & Heath QU digital mixer for intuitive control and flexible event management

The result is balanced sound throughout the hall, supporting everything from presentations and assemblies to full musical productions.

Videopro Proud

From the moment the new screens were powered on, the impact was immediate. Staff and stakeholders were impressed by the clarity, brightness and visual presence of the displays. Feedback from both the school community and visiting parents has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly regarding improved visibility from all areas of the hall.

This upgrade ensures the space continues to support the diverse needs of John Paul College.

“When the screens were first turned on, I think everyone was impressed with the image quality and the overall brightness, especially with all the ambient light that is in the space. And even with the house lights turned up full, the image cuts through all of that light. ” said Mark Chaplin, Videopro Account Manager.
